The client approached Dawsons in July 2010 regarding his project. He wanted a complete system for his 6 bedroom modern home in the Channel Islands. He sent a hand drawn plan at first with accompanying email and a budget for 100k. He had seen other companies but had not been as impressed with their presentations. We didn’t anticipate the scale or timescale of this project that was only commissioned in November 2012. One of the longest builds we have been involved with.
The clients wanted a distributed Media system delivering HD movies and TV to all rooms, Audio to serve to all zones of the house, normal sort of stuff. Adding to this Dawsons had to provide Network, Security, BMS and AC integration. Client also wanted to monitor all external door and windows for their state. They were especially keen on the Kaleidescape system.
The conversations that followed discussed the options and Dawson’s at no stage said what this type of project could cost, we let the client drive the budget by his choices. In the end the Cinema alone accounted for his initial budget. We attended many planning meetings with M&E, Architect and QS partners of the project.
Dawson’s visited the site at an early stage and could then identify with the scale of the project, it was truly immense for a domestic residence and building techniques to those used on major corporate projects.
The system we designed used Crestron Digital media to distribute 12 sources to 16 rooms. The audio matrix provides 56 zones of independent audio, four of these are outside zones. The entire infrastructure is future proofed and based on CAT7 cabling with ducts in place for future fibre installation. The rooms of the house extend around a central terrace and weather permitting the whole indoor pool can be opened up to the terrace by 30m sliding doors, all under the control of the kitchen touch screen.
The hub of control is the Crestron V15 panel in the kitchen giving control over the whole house, all aspects of the lighting, heating, air conditioning and security. Our client is informed of security or system operation alerts by this panel. Around the house are a selection of Crestron Touch panels, in wall and handheld, all capable of showing video from the security system. The Crestron system also performs door entry from the 2 entrances and gates, the Audio system sounds speakers in selected rooms when the door bell is rung, the basement and pool wall panels perform as door entry intercoms. The kitchen touch panel also doubles as a TV and security monitor with on screen controls. The CCTV systems feature HD PTZ domes to patrol the grounds front and back together with the dedicated spot cameras around the property etc.
The Three control system racks reside in their own temperature controlled room and are fixed down with client access to the front in their utility room and technician rear access. Incoming cables travel down trays and under the specially constructed floors up into the AV racks. Dawson’s installed a fully managed wireless network with dedicated server to host all our applications and programs. We can fully manage and remotely program any aspect of the system. Our experience and knowledge with many disciplines has shown through since the clients regularly look to us when many issues unrelated to our system occur. The property is equipped with a full BMS system and we interface to this via BACNET and IP control of all the air-conditioning units. Dawson’s did not supply the lighting system but have mapped all the lighting scenes onto our control devices so the client only needs one control device. The system supports iPhone, iPad and android interfaces.
